Papillion's November Starts at a One-Room Schoolhouse and Ends There, Too

October 29, 2026

"Due to the rainy weather expected this Saturday, Fall for Papillion has been rescheduled to November 7."

That one line from the Papillion Area Historical Society changed the shape of Papillion's month. A harvest-themed morning built around 1800s prairie life now falls just two weeks before the holiday season begins. It also means the Historic Portal Schoolhouse holds an 1800s class on November 7 and holds Santa on November 28.

Put the three dates side by side and November 2026 becomes a run of three Saturday events that moves from downtown, then Shadow Lake Towne Center, then back downtown to the same small campus where it started.

The Rain Date That Rearranged the Month

In its September 2026 newsletter, the Papillion Public Library listed Fall for Papillion for Saturday, Sept. 26, from 9 a.m. to noon at the corner of 3rd and Jefferson Streets. If you saw that and figured you'd missed it, you didn't. The host's page now lists Saturday, Nov. 7, 2026, from 9 a.m. to noon, at the same corner. The event is free and hosted by the historical society and the Papillion Public Library.

Here's how the month lines up now:

Saturday Event Where Hours
Nov. 7 Fall for Papillion Corner of 3rd & Jefferson 9 a.m. to noon
Nov. 21 19th Annual Holiday Parade & Tree Lighting 7775 Towne Center Pkwy 6 to 8 p.m.
Nov. 28 Winter Wonderland 2026 109 N Washington St 4 to 8 p.m.

The first and last of these happen on the same block of downtown, so it helps to know that block.

What Sits at 3rd and Jefferson

The corner where Fall for Papillion sets up is part of a small historic campus. The historical society describes its farmhouse and schoolhouse as sitting with the city library on Washington Street, between 2nd and 3rd Streets. Sump Memorial Library has been at 222 N Jefferson St. since 1996. It's named for donors Wally and Elaine Sump and was renovated in 2016, according to the library's 2023–2028 strategic plan.

The same plan says the library grounds hold three historic structures: an 1890s one-room school called the Portal Schoolhouse, a rural Papillion outhouse and the 1860s John Sautter farmhouse. The historical society maintains all three. The society's preservation work began in 1979 with an effort to save the Sautter farmhouse. The schoolhouse was moved in beside it in 1995.

So the schoolhouse has stood next to the farmhouse for more than 30 years. In November it gets more use than usual, with two very different events three weeks apart.

Nov. 7 Runs on a Clock

Most fall festivals let you wander. Fall for Papillion has a printed schedule, and it rewards showing up early. Field games start every 15 to 30 minutes across the three-hour morning:

  • 9:15 a.m.: Egg and spoon race
  • 9:30 a.m.: Wheelbarrow race
  • 9:45 a.m.: Sack race
  • 10:00 a.m.: Shoe kick
  • 10:15 a.m.: Three-legged race
  • 10:45 a.m.: Tug of war
  • 11:15 a.m.: Water bucket relay
  • 11:45 a.m.: Water balloon toss

The schoolhouse runs on its own schedule. The society offers an interactive 1800s class session inside the Historic Portal School at 9:15, 10:15 and 11:15 a.m., and you sign up at the information table. Families who want both a race and a class can plan around the overlap. The 9:15 class starts at the same moment as the egg and spoon race, so the 10:15 or 11:15 class leaves the early races open.

Next door, the Sautter House serves the sweet side of the morning, with homemade desserts, a $1 cake walk and a dessert raffle. Between races, the grounds host prairie-life demonstrations: butter making, laundry by hand, feather-and-ink writing, handkerchief doll making, switchel and weaving. For younger kids there are animal furs and tracks, horse tail braiding, a Morse code scavenger hunt, "feed the pig," a barnyard toss and a farm chore race.

Moving from late September to early November also changes the setting. A rain-free September morning could still have felt like summer. A November morning outdoors means jackets, so the water balloon toss at 11:45 is a finale best saved for kids who brought a change of clothes.

The Middle Saturday Moves to Shadow Lake

Two weeks later, the month moves across town. On Saturday, Nov. 21, Shadow Lake Towne Center holds its 19th Annual Holiday Parade & Tree Lighting from 6 to 8 p.m. in the middle of the center at 7775 Towne Center Pkwy. The parade starts at 6 p.m. Fireworks follow right after, provided by Bellino Fireworks and the Salvation Army Kroc Center. The center says Santa "and all of his friends" will be there, along with surprise parade guests.

Two things about this date shape the rest of the month. It's an evening event, so a family can do Nov. 7 in the morning and this one after dark. It's also the first of two Santa sightings in Papillion this November. The second comes a week later and back downtown, in the schoolhouse where kids sat through a pioneer class on the 7th.

Nov. 28 Puts Santa Behind the Schoolhouse Door

The Saturday after Thanksgiving belongs to the Papillion Community Foundation. Winter Wonderland 2026 runs from 4 to 8 p.m. on Nov. 28, and the event listing gives the address as 109 N Washington St. The foundation's 2026 page promises Santa inside the Historic Portal Schoolhouse, where each guest gets a free candy cane and one Christmas wish.

That page also lists horse and carriage rides through downtown Papillion past the holiday lights, outdoor firepits, and live music from local musicians, students and bands. The foundation's general Winter Wonderland page adds hayrack rides, free hot chocolate and a Christkindl Market for local artisans and small businesses. That list describes what to expect rather than a confirmed 2026 lineup, so check the foundation's page closer to the date for the final schedule.

The two schoolhouse days compare like this:

Nov. 7 Nov. 28
Host Papillion Area Historical Society and Papillion Public Library Papillion Community Foundation
Inside the Portal Schoolhouse 1800s class sessions at 9:15, 10:15 and 11:15 a.m. Santa, with a candy cane and one wish per guest
Time of day Morning, 9 a.m. to noon Evening, 4 to 8 p.m.
Cost Free; $1 cake walk at the Sautter House Hot chocolate listed as free

The Washington Street Stops Between the Two

Both downtown Saturdays put you on or near Washington Street, which is where Papillion's independent shops cluster. The Papillion Downtown Business Association directory lists these members within a short walk of the schoolhouse campus and the Winter Wonderland address:

Stop Address What it is
The Book Nook 114 N Washington St Bookstore
Sauced by Alfaro 115 N Washington St Restaurant
Twisted Vine 123 N Washington St Craft beer and wine bar, music venue
The Rosy Clay Co. 138 N Washington St Pottery studio with paint-your-own
Graley's Creamery & Confections 147 N Washington St Creamery and sweets
Papillion Taco Guy 1st & Washington, at 1st St. Plaza Taco cart
Kajoma's Fashion Boutique 104 E 1st St Boutique
Papillion Flower Patch 217 N Jefferson St Florist

The Fall for Papillion games end at noon. Sauced by Alfaro and the Papillion Taco Guy cart are both a block or so from the corner of 3rd and Jefferson. On Nov. 28, Winter Wonderland's address at 109 N Washington puts The Book Nook and Twisted Vine almost next door, and that Saturday is a natural day for holiday browsing on the block. If you want coffee before the 9:15 egg and spoon race, The Beanery has its Papillion shop at 344 S Washington St. The business association directory isn't dated, so check hours with each shop before you go.

One More Downtown Date After the Month Ends

The run doesn't quite stop at Nov. 28. The business association's calendar lists a Gran Cookie Crawl on Sunday, Dec. 6, from noon to 3 p.m., with 15 local businesses as stops. The crawl is a business association event, the same group whose directory lists the shops above, and it lands the Sunday after Santa's evening in the schoolhouse.

At The Jackson Group, we keep a close eye on calendars like this one, because knowing which Saturday puts Santa in the schoolhouse is part of knowing Papillion.
